Nick got up fast, but he was dizzy; black spots crowded his vision and he had to give himself a second. Precious seconds. Enough time for Matt to limp into his bathroom and close the door.
When Nick regained his vision, he raced down the hall and pounded on Matt’s door. He heard the lock click in place.
He let out a string of curses, placing his hands in his hair and pacing back and forth.
He felt Chris’ hands around his waist, forcing him to stop pacing. “You’re gonna wake up Mom,” Chris insisted. “What is your problem?”
“Matt- he- he burns himself!” Nick wailed.
“I know,” Chris said softly. “Is that what he’s doing?”
“I don’t know!” Nick screeched, falling to his knees.
Nick couldn’t get the sight of his ruined legs out of his mind… all those scars, the scratches, the perfectly even, neat rows of burn marks… it would haunt him forever.
“I can’t do this anymore!” Matt screamed. “I can’t!” He was barely audible over Nick’s helpless wails.
